Member of the Month

Thomas Benham

This month’s member of the month is Thomas Benham.

Thomas is the baby in a long line of Benham family members. His grandparents were part of the foundation that makes our Club what it is today.

His father is a local poet laureate and his mother a city councilwoman, so Thomas comes from overachieving stock.

I have had the good fortune of being Thomas' employer not only in the Sports Shop, but in camps and junior activities. I must say that when he asked me for a job, I was skeptical as I always am with young people. However, he has turned out to be a stellar employee and a most energetic instructor. He is very respectful of all the duties I ask of him and takes the initiative to do things before he knows I’ll ask.

This is not to say that Thomas is perfect. The phrase did come about in the Shop that, “if you have time to lean, you have time to clean”. I started using
this phrase not only because of Thomas, but Dan too. It was a close race. Jack wasn’t in the running because he sits and Erin never leans but, on occasion has been known to talk to herself.

I’m sad to say that my employer status with Thomas will soon come to an end as Thomas is off to college soon. Thomas has been accepted to UCLA, Tulane, Virginia and many top universities and, I know whichever he chooses, he will do well. I will miss his deep voice, his questions, his lack of common sense at times (which has improved immensely with having a job), his energy, and most of all, him.

Good luck to you, Thomas. Make us proud!

Knotty Problem...

Foot Fault ~

During the service motion, the server shall not:
a. Change position by walking or running, although slight movements of the feet are permitted; or
b Touch the baseline or the court with either foot; or
c. Touch the area outside the imaginary extension of the sideline with either foot; or
d. Touch the imaginary extension of the center mark with either foot.

If the server breaks this rule it is a "Foot Fault".

A player may warn an opponent the the opponent has committed a flagrant foot fault. If the foot faulting continues, the player may attempt to locate an official. If no official is available, the player may call flagrant foot faults. Compliance with the foot fault rule is very much a function of a player's personal honor system. The plea that the Server should not be penalized because the server only just touched the line and did not rush the net is not acceptable. Habitual foot faulting, whether intentional or careless, is just as surely cheating as is making a deliberate bad line call.

Tip of the Month

The Dictate Games

The first two games of the second set (best-ofthree match) are the dictate games. It is when a player has the opportunity to continue their dominance over the other player after winning the first set, or to reestablish their presence in the match if they’ve lost the set.

Win the first set and the percentages say you should win the match. Winning it doesn’t guarantee victory. But, win or lose, those first two games of set two can significantly affect the dynamics of what follows.

There are several kinds of opponents and knowing your opponent will help you in the dictate games, there is the opponent who will come out fighting like a wounded bear, there is the opponent that thinks they can still win but it doesn’t take much to convince them otherwise.

Remember get them down and keep them down. When you win the first set tell yourself you have just created a big problem—you have wounded your opponent and motivated them to come out fighting. Pay attention or you will get hurt.

Winning the first two games of the second set after having won the first set will severely de-motivate your opponent. Losing these games and you have given them hope and created a dogfight with your opponent.

Likewise, if you have lost the first set you can change the whole dynamics of the match by winning the first two games of the 2nd set. So now you can see how important for either player the dictate games are.

If you won the first set, fight hard for the first two games and don’t have you victory party before your victory. If you lost the first set, fight hard for those first two games of the second set to change the momentum of the match.

Be Aware

Recently, some members have had their cars broken into while playing at the Club. Lock your car and DO NOT leave valuables out in the open where someone can make a quick smash and grab. We are evaluating possible solutions to help prevent this from happening again, but we need your help too. Thank you for your understanding, Management-
